Story at a glance:
A prescription drug called Naltrexone which is used to deal with the cravings of addictive compounds such as heroin and alcohol in low doses has a dramatic positive impact on a whole range of health issues such as:
- cancer
- multiple sclerosis
- chronic fatigue / fibromyalgia
- Parkinson's
- Alzheimer's
- Irritable Bowel Syndrome
- psoriasis
- lupus
- HIV / AIDS
- and many more (see the more extensive list in the article below)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You may be aware of the fact that there are certain prescription drugs that are used to help individuals with addictions to drugs such as heroin and alcohol.
One that is well known for heroin addiction is methadone, which is a synthetic opioid.
These drugs are called "opioid antagonists" - compounds interact with the same receptors in the body that compounds such as heroin do such that the cravings are addressed without some of the negative side effects of these addictive drugs.
Another opioid antagonist is Naltrexone:
Naltrexone itself was approved by the FDA in 1984 in a 50mg dose for the purpose of helping heroin or opium addicts, by blocking the effect of such drugs.
As an active opioid antagonist, LDN works by blocking opioid receptors, which in turn helps activate your body's immune system.
FDA-approved naltrexone, in a low dose, can normalize the immune system — helping those with HIV/AIDS, cancer, autoimmune diseases, and central nervous system disorders.
There is a great website dedicated to this topic: Low Dose Naltrexone.org
From this website, here is a quotation from a Medical Doctor which suggests the benefits of LDN therapy:
If you or someone you know is dealing with any of the health issues in the more extensive list below and you/they are struggling to make some progress, low dose naltrexone is definitely worth exploring.
I would suggest you educate yourself on the topic and discuss it with your physician.
For those of you here in British Columbia (and some other jurisdictions) most Naturopathic Doctors now have prescribing rights, and they may be more receptive to exploring this option.
Physicians operate on proof provided by research: the low dose naltrexone website link above is a good place to start.
One of the problems is that since there is no money to be made from LDN, pharmaceutical companies have no interest in conducting large scale studies that would provide more research based evidence on the safety and effectiveness of LDN.

Rob

“Low Dose Naltrexone (LDN) may well be the most important therapeutic breakthrough in over fifty years. It provides a new, safe and inexpensive method of medical treatment by mobilizing the natural defenses of one’s own immune system.
LDN substantially reduces health care costs and improves treatment of a wide array of diseases. Unfortunately, because naltrexone has been without patent protection for many years, no pharmaceutical company will bear the expense of the large clinical trials necessary for FDA approval of LDN’s new special uses. It is now up to public institutions to seize the opportunity that LDN offers.”

Also here are a couple of YouTube videos which talk about LDN:
Because no pharmaceutical companies are promoting this product, I can pretty much guarantee that your Medical Doctor has no knowledge of this therapy whatsoever.
