Inflammation: For Healthy Aging, You Need to Turn Down the Heat!
Inflammation: For Healthy Aging,
You Need to Turn Down the Heat!
-by Rob Lamberton, B.Sc.
When asked about inflammation, most people in the general public will understand about athletic injuries, overuse injuries, and the inevitable wear and tear which occurs as a result of the natural aging process.
What most people do not understand is that there is a more insidious and dangerous inflammatory process that develops as we age that we are probably not even aware that is going on.
This chronic, systemic inflammatory process is increasingly being shown by researchers to either outright cause chronic, degenerative diseases – or at least be a major contributor to these disease processes.
Some of these chronic, degenerative diseases that have been shown to have an inflammation component as part of their development include: (1)
- Arthritis
- Heart Disease
- Diabetes
- Digestive System Diseases (such as Crohn’s and Irritable Bowel Syndrome – IBS)
- Dementia and Alzheimer’s
- Allergies
- Cancer
- Fibromyalgia
- Pancreatitis
- Lupus
- Stroke
- Psoriasis
- Surgical Complications
Inflammation: Part of a Healthy Immune System
We need to have a healthy inflammation as a short term response as part of our immune system to be able to deal with ongoing assault from invaders such as bacteria and viruses as well as a response to trauma, allergies and infection.
The inflammation process becomes a problem when it is not a short term response, but rather does not switch off when the immediate crisis is resolved that can lead to problems.
Are You Inflamed?
Here is a short list of symptoms that arise with the development of chronic inflammation which may give you some indication if inflammation may be becoming a health issue for you personally:
- body aches and pains
- congestion
- frequent infections
- diarrhea
- dry eyes
- indigestion
- shortness of breath
- skin outbreaks
- swelling
- stiffness
- weight gain/obesity (2)
How to Manage Chronic, Systemic Inflammation
So given the fact that none of us want to be dealing with the chronic, degenerative diseases that can develop as a result of this silent inflammation that we cannot even feel, what can we do to manage it?
There are several approaches we can use to manage this inflammation from becoming a problem:
- get inflammation levels checked – and periodically re-checked
- lifestyle management (including diet)
- consume natural anti-inflammatory compounds on an ongoing basis
Consult with your Health Care Professional to get your current level of inflammation checked: there are various inflammatory compounds which can be checked in the lab with a blood sample: the most common one that people are familiar with and Medical Doctors check for is
C-Reactive Protein (CRP).
Lifestyle factors that can influence inflammation levels include:
- getting enough sleep
- managing stress levels (especially cortisol)
- being active
- avoiding exposure to toxins
- eating a healthy diet (dietary choices can either contribute to inflammation, or keep it under check)
- smoking / second hand smoke
- prescription / non-prescription and recreational drugs
- excessive alcohol consumption
Dietary guidelines involve many common sense approaches to eating healthy food, such as avoiding sugars and unhealthy fats, eating organic fruit, vegetables, and protein (such as organic, grass-fed beef, wild fish, organic chickens etc.), preferably avoiding or drinking moderate amounts of colas, and drinking lots of good quality water.
Eating foods (such as those above), which will help to keep the body in an alkaline state as opposed to tending towards an acidic environment.
Certain spices and foods can have benefits for combating inflammation such as: turmeric (for the curcumin content), ginger, cilantro, rosemary, cloves, black pepper, garlic and others.
Supplements for Inflammation
Many people when dealing with pain and inflammation will use prescription and/or non-prescription drugs (such as NSAIDS: non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), however there can be many negative health consequences and side effects when these drugs are used (especially long term). The good news is there are many natural compounds that will provide the same benefits – without the side effects.
Increasingly, progressive Health Care Professionals are suggesting to their patients that they should consume natural anti-inflammatory compounds not only in response to an acute inflammation episode, but also on an ongoing basis to help prevent chronic inflammation from developing.
As a product formulator of nutritional and nutraceutical products for Health Care Professionals, this is exactly the recommendation we include on our anti-inflammatory products: take them every day, but increase the dosage if you have an acute inflammation episode.
Here is a (partial) list of ingredients commonly used in anti-inflammatory compounds:
- ginger
- boswellia
- curcumin
- rosemary
- yucca
- devil’s claw root
- tart cherry
- Holy basil
- Cat’s claw
- Green lipped mussel extract
- Nopal (prickly pear cactus)
- fish oils
- enzymes such as bromelain, papain and serrapeptidase
There is an old saying which goes: “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” – and this certainly applies to inflammation and chronic, degenerative disease.
Don’t forget that the lifestyle choices you make today will influence your state of health – ten, twenty, thirty – or even more years from now!
