The Key to Long Term Healthy Weight Management
-by Rob Lamberton B.Sc
Leptin Balance
Obesity rates and the resultant health complications are reaching epidemic proportions in North America.
The reasons as to why this is happening is a complex issue involving many different factors: some of these factors would include (but this is not an exhaustive list), the following:
- socio-economic status and level of education
- genetic predisposition and epigenetic* expression
- amount of sleep
- family and community connections
- toxin load (including heavy metals)
- excretory (elimination), organ health (of the liver, kidneys, intestines, lungs and skin), dysbiosis (imbalance between good and bad bacteria in the intestines), and leaky gut, etc.
- parasite load
- digestive enzyme function and optimization
- hormonal imbalance (especially elevated cortisol levels, as cortisol is a major stress hormone)
- diet (pro-inflammatory/anti-inflammatory, amount of sugar- especially high fructose corn syrup-HFCS)
- exercise (and specifically the right kind to influence epigenetic expression, telomere length, etc.)
–telomere length **
- And the list goes on…
*Epigenetics:thestudy of inheritable changes that occur without a change in the DNAsequence (in-other- words, individuals can inherit changes in health and disease tendencies from their parents without changes in their DNA).
**Telomeres: the end of chromosomes. The ends of chromosomes are specialized structures that are involved in the replication and stability of DNA molecules. Telomeres get shorter every time our cells divide, and the shorter they get, the more prone the individual becomes to the development of chronic, degenerative disease.
In my role as a product formulator of nutritional and nutraceutical products for Health Care Professionals, it is well known that one of the holy grails of product formulations is the weight loss category…And yet, most products either do not work very well, or work only temporarily.
Although one cannot isolate one specific issue related to obesity and weight loss and hope to resolve it, I wanted to share some information about what I consider to be The key to long-term, healthy weight management.
Leptin Hormone Balance
Very few people in the general public have ever heard about Leptin: and even most Health Care Professionals are unfamiliar with it (because it was just discovered in 1996).
The exciting thing is that there are a number of botanicals that have been proven via published research to deal effectively with Leptin resistance and Leptin balance…………..
Here is some content from our corporate website which concerns Leptin and Leptin resistance.
What is Leptin?
Leptin is a hormone produced by the fat cells. It is responsible for managing metabolism, weight management, and hormone balance. Leptin influences the brain and it controls energy, appetite and metabolic rate. Leptin problems can cause a person to eat too much, and is responsible for compromised metabolism, food cravings, food obsessions, and can contribute to heart disease.
Leptin’s Role in Weight Management
Leptin is the key hormone that regulates aleptincoverppetite and weight loss by managing satiety, appetite control, metabolism and blood sugar.
Leptin tells your brain when to eat, how much to eat, and most importantly when to stop eating.
Overweight people have high levels of leptin in their blood yet are resistant to its effects; this is known as “Leptin resistance”.
Reducing Leptin resistance and serum Leptin levels enhances Leptin function. This is critical to successful weight management in that it lowers total body fat.
The Leptin Hormone has a significant influence on the following:
-insulin
-cardiovascular health
-reproductive function
-sex hormones
-immune function
-adrenal function
-stress
-thyroid function
-bone health
-cancer
-inflammation
Leptin’s Role in Metabolic Wellness
Leptin resistance has been shown to exacerbate symptoms of metabolic syndrome (blood lipids, blood sugar and inflammation which are also known promoters of premature aging).
Researchers have also found that Leptin resistance may hinder weight loss. Leptin resistance is a chronic inflammatory problem that can lead to slow, steady weight gain. Researchers have discovered that C-Reactive Protein (CRP) can bind to Leptin, preventing Leptin from being able to regulate hunger.
When people gain weight, it increases the production of CRP…..This is low level, chronic inflammation that can contribute to chronic, degenerative diseases such as:
- Auto-immune diseases in general
- arthritis
- Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and other GI diseases
- Asthma
- Cancer
- Dementia/Alzheimer’s
- Insulin Resistance/Diabetes
The term “Leptin Resistance” refers to this binding of leptin by C-Reactive Protein (CRP).
Leptin is the major signaling hormone that tells our brain that we are satiated (i.e., are full). Thus, when Leptin is unable to get into the brain by crossing the blood/brain barrier, people lose their sense of satiety.
THIS IS WHY PEOPLE KEEP EATING WHEN THEY ARE FULL AND GO ON CARBOHYDRATE BINGES…
Research has indicated that after weight loss, changes in the hormones that control hunger and weight gain occur, including a decrease in Leptin levels in the brain. These changes can increase hunger, and can cause a person’s metabolism to slow down. These hormonal changes may explain why so many attempts at weight loss end up in a “yo-yo effect” of weight loss and subsequent weight gain.
The key to long term healthy weight management is Leptin balance
*** My personal philosophy, and our company’s corporate philosophy, is that by providing effective formulations in this area, we can help give people a “jump start” to get them going on their road to recovering their health:
Help them to feel better emotionally, have less stress, more energy, feel more inclined to get active and make healthy lifestyle choices: because ultimately that is THE key to long term health.
